The rule of three

It’s often said that things happen in threes, sometimes you get two and are really looking hard for the third one to make up the set. Not so this day.

Shortly after we opened in the morning, someone called to say they had dropped their violin, and that the neck had come off. A few hours later, another call with the same problem, then finally just before we went home, someone called in with a bass, also with the neck broken. Can you guess what I’ll be doing for the next few weeks?

Sometimes you can be lucky, and the neck may just pop out from the impact, but more usually the case involves the buttons breaking off with the neck, making for a much more involved repair, requiring casts and grafts. Frequently the neck blocks can also be split, ribs snapped off with it etc.
Putting it all back together again has to be done in a series of stages, and can be quite time consuming.
